![]() ![]() announced a call for pre-alpha testers to help test a new "distributed syncing product to help manage personal files between multiple computers". It can sync files between devices on a local network, or between remote devices over the Internet via a modified version of the BitTorrent protocol.Īlthough not touted by the developers as an intended direct replacement nor competitor to cloud-based file synchronization services, it has attained much of its publicity in this potential role. is a proprietary peer-to-peer file synchronization tool available for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Amazon Kindle Fire and BSD. Resilio Sync (formerly BitTorrent Sync) by Resilio, Inc. Sync should win if it can max out your connection, but if for whatever reason it can’t (factors include your ISP, time of day, and overall congestion on the network), the alternatives are certainly good ones.Īt the end of the day, Sync may be the fastest in most cases, but speed probably isn’t the only feature you want.English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Turkish, Dutch, Indonesian Of course, it’s possible that Sync will not be the fastest for you, especially if you and the receiver are close to a Google, Microsoft, or Dropbox data center. Sync will definitely be the fastest if you and the receiver are on the same network or physically close (that’s exactly why BitTorrent is trying to pitch Sync to businesses, especially if they need to transfer files between different operating systems). You may find that OneDrive is faster than Google Drive, or that Dropbox is king. That being said, your mileage will definitely vary. This means it is designed to take the shortest and fastest path when getting file pieces from one device to another, and it doesn’t have to rely on third-party servers that are typically involved when sending files via cloud services. The reason Sync is so fast comes down to the fact that it is based on the BitTorrent protocol. They were limited by the same download bandwidth, but the upload section of the process was notably much slower (many ISPs worldwide offer much slower upload speeds than download speeds). Yet it’s worth noting that Google Drive, OneDrive, and Dropbox still performed worse. Times were in the double digit minutes, and largely depended on what connections my friends had. What happens if I want to send the episodes to my friend across town? Yet this is for a test performed on the same network. The whole process was done in 1 minute and 6 seconds, according to the timer on my Nexus 5. I then sent the link along to my laptop, grabbed Sync there as well, and hit approve to get things rolling: Nonetheless, I grabbed the first four episodes (1.37 GB) of The Wire, which just so happens to be one of the best TV shows ever made, and downloaded Sync onto my Windows desktop. I do sometimes get faster speeds than that, especially if I’m transferring over FTP or BitTorrent, but I honestly wasn’t expecting anything too crazy in this case. My ISP, for example, claims I have a 35 Mbps up and 3 Mbps down connection, which is certainly slower than the above. Most people don’t have access to such speeds. We’re confident that a slower Internet connection would yield similar results. It’s important here to note that Dropbox, Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive all rate-limit uploads and do not fully utilize the 1 Gbps bandwidth available (in regards to the office Internet connection, not the LAN switched). The results are impressive, and while we didn’t doubt them given how Sync is designed, we figured doing the test ourselves was worth a shot.īitTorrent made a persuasive argument in its blog post: The above times are averages for each of the three times. You have to remember, however, that BitTorrent’s headquarters has a ridiculous fast connection both downstream and upstream.īitTorrent ran three tests for each service: In the morning at the start of the workday, in the afternoon, and in the evening when the company’s San Francisco office was mostly empty and Internet use was at a minimum. Sync’s time might seem ridiculously low, almost as if the Internet wasn’t involved at all. Sync performed 8x faster than Google Drive, 11x faster than OneDrive, and 16x faster than Dropbox: ![]()

![]() ![]() The trap and mumble rap subgenres have become the most popular form of hip hop during the mid-late 2010s and early 2020s. During the late 2000s and early 2010s "blog era", rappers were able to build up a following through online methods of music distribution, such as social media and blogs, and mainstream hip hop took on a more melodic, sensitive direction following the commercial decline of gangsta rap. The United States also saw the success of regional styles such as crunk, a Southern genre that emphasized the beats and music more than the lyrics, and alternative hip hop began to secure a place in the mainstream, due in part to the crossover success of its artists. The popularity of hip hop music continued through the late 1990s to early-2000s "bling era" with hip hop influences increasingly finding their way into other genres of popular music, such as neo soul, nu metal, and R&B. Hip hop became a best-selling genre in the mid-1990s and the top-selling music genre by 1999. Hip hop continued to diversify at this time with other regional styles emerging, such as Southern rap and Atlanta hip hop. West Coast hip hop was dominated by G-funk in the early-mid 1990s, while East Coast hip hop was dominated by jazz rap, alternative hip hop, and hardcore hip hop. The gangsta rap subgenre, focused on the violent lifestyles and impoverished conditions of inner-city African American youth, gained popularity at this time. New school hip hop was the genre's second wave, marked by its electro sound, and led into golden age hip hop, an innovative period between the mid-1980s and mid-1990s that also developed hip hop's own album era. The 1980s marked the diversification of hip hop as the genre developed more complex styles and spread around the world. ![]() Old school hip hop was the first mainstream wave of the genre, marked by its disco influence and party-oriented lyrics. Hip hop music was not officially recorded for play on radio or television until 1979, largely due to poverty during the genre's birth and lack of acceptance outside ghetto neighborhoods. Rapping developed as a vocal style in which the artist speaks or chants along rhythmically with an instrumental or synthesized beat. Turntablist techniques such as scratching and beatmatching developed along with the breaks. Hip hop's early evolution occurred as sampling technology and drum machines became widely available and affordable. At block parties, DJs played percussive breaks of popular songs using two turntables and a DJ mixer to be able to play breaks from two copies of the same record, alternating from one to the other and extending the "break". ![]() Hip hop as both a musical genre and a culture was formed during the 1970s when block parties became increasingly popular in New York City, particularly among African American youth residing in the Bronx. The term hip hop music is sometimes used synonymously with the term rap music, though rapping is not a required component of hip hop music the genre may also incorporate other elements of hip hop culture, including DJing, turntablism, scratching, beatboxing, and instrumental tracks. While often used to refer solely to rapping, "hip hop" more properly denotes the practice of the entire subculture. Other elements include sampling beats or bass lines from records (or synthesized beats and sounds), and rhythmic beatboxing. It was developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/ scratching with turntables, break dancing, and graffiti art. According to the professor Asante of African American studies at Temple University, "hip hop is something that blacks can unequivocally claim as their own ". This genre of music originated as anti-drug and anti-violence, while consisting of stylized rhythmic music (usually built around drum beats) that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. Hip hop music or hip-hop music, also known as rap music and formerly known as disco rap, is a genre of popular music that originated in the Bronx borough of New York City in the early 1970s by African Americans, and it had been around for years prior before mainstream discovery. ![]() ![]() He is overwhelmed and welcomes his departure, feeling that, whatever his struggles in life might be, he prefers them to residence in the Land of the Dead.Ĭreon king of Thebes, successor to Oedipus. Agamemnon tells the story of his murder by his wife, Clytemnestra, and her paramour, Aegisthus, a story referred to repeatedly throughout the epic, effectively contrasting the murderous infidelity of Clytemnestra with the dedicated loyalty of Penelope. Until seeing her among the dead, Odysseus was unaware of his mother's death. ![]() Odysseus' own mother, who died of grief and longing for him, is allowed to approach only after his audience with the seer. (The journey inland, however, takes place after the events told of in The Odyssey.) If he follows these and other instructions, Odysseus can live out his life and die in peace. At that place, Odysseus is to make certain sacrifices to Poseidon. Furthermore, the prophet instructs Odysseus that he must eventually pursue yet another quest, carrying his oar inland until he meets a race of men who know so little about the sea that they think the oar is "a fan to winnow grain" (11.146). Echoing the curse of the Cyclops (9.590-95), Tiresias warns that Odysseus himself might eventually arrive home, but he will be "a broken man - all shipmates lost" (11.130) and find his household in disarray. Above all, they must not harm the cattle of Helios, the Sungod, no matter the temptation. However, Tiresias reports, the Greeks can get home alive if they use proper judgment and control. Tiresias observes that one of the gods, the earth shaker (Poseidon), is angry with Odysseus for blinding his son (Polyphemus, the Cyclops) and will cause Odysseus and his men many problems. Drinking the blood temporarily revitalizes the dead briefly they can communicate with Odysseus and speak only truth. Following instructions, he must speak with Tiresias, the blind seer from Thebes, before he can allow his mother or any others to approach. His mortality is put in context as he watches the shades of warrior comrades, legendary figures, and even his own mother. The journey to the Land of the Dead - where the dead ("souls") receive reciprocity ("Justice") - is not so much a test for Odysseus as it is an epiphany. Others are drawn to the blood: Odysseus' mother, Anticleia Tiresias the prophet and old comrades Agamemnon and Achilles, among others. Because of the urgency of Odysseus' journey to the Land of the Dead, Elpenor was left unburied, and his spirit requests proper rites when the Greeks return to Aeaea. And the magpie at the center of the nest is Byrne, an amiable if slightly alien figure who shares his genuine wonder at the world with 1,700 guests every night. The tunes in American Utopia are the result of liberal borrowing from world musical traditions - proof positive that culture is appropriation. And "Burning Down the House" gets everyone in the house on their feet. "Everybody's Coming to My House" offers an explosion of energy with a twinge of anxiety (as established by Byrne's introduction). It's impossible not to groove in your seat to "Lazy," or want to join the drum circle on "I Zimbra," if only to shake those maracas that look like they were made for a Super Mario villain. It was in abundance the night I attended, from the moment Byrne appeared onstage with a model of the human brain, singing "Here." He was soon joined by 11 other multitalented performers who danced, sang, played instruments, and sweated it out on an empty gray stage for 100 exuberant minutes. ![]() Tim Keiper (with the maracas), Gustavo Di Dalva, Stéphane San Juan, Daniel Freedman, and David Byrne appear in American Utopia on Broadway. To be clear: American Utopia is still the joyfest it was when it first opened at the Hudson Theatre in 2019 - and if there is anything audiences need desperately right now, it is joy. Those questions circled my brain like ravenous vultures during much of Byrne's bountiful feast of a concert at the St James Theatre. Do you still get to call yourself a rebel into your 60s and 70s, when your generation controls the politics, economics, and cultural means of production of the most powerful empire on Earth? And what kind of utopia has the hegemony of the boomers brought this country? And after viewing the arsenal of percussion that parades across the stage at David Byrne's Broadway concert, American Utopia, it is hard to dispute the old priest's assessment - even as that pound pound pound has come to represent not the knocking of barbarians at the gate of middle-class propriety, but the downbeat of dominant culture. And while the early New Wave band might have hit its peak during the cultural coming-of-age of Generation X, it gained plenty of fans among the boomers, that generation of eternal teenagers for whom rock and roll is a living faith. Like Talking Heads front man David Byrne, my parents are part of the baby boomer generation. For years they fondly recalled the encounter as proof of their allegiance to the counterculture: pissing off an old Catholic priest with their noisy music. They played it so much that an older priest on sabbatical in the adjacent unit eventually knocked on the door and asked them to turn it down, as he simply could not stand the constant "pound pound pound" in his words.
